Please ignore the dust...

The server known as holly (aka holly2, www.its.brockport.edu, and possibly other names) had a critical hardware failure and needed to be rebuilt. However, because the system was over 5 years old, the replacement system has been updated with a new version of the operating system.

With the updates, there are some things that may not work as expected. Also, there may be some services that were available before that we still need to restore.

Also, if you are making ssh connections (also: scp, sftp, and other tools and applications) to the server, you should know that the the server's keys have changed and will need to be updated in on your client. This is typically done when you make the connection and the client tool tells you about an invalid or changed key being presented. This is normal when services like this change.

If you find any issues, please contact the helpdesk at x5151 and have a ticket entered.

FAQ

Why the name change?

The prior server's name had no connection with the intended use of the server.

The server's intended use was as a place for students to have access to a web server for their course work and to allow them to put up personal web pages. This was before services like Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social networking sites were avaialble.

With these services in place now, the only intended use for this server is for students to have a place to perform their course work for different classes.

What about my department pages?

Somewhere along the line some department pages were hosted on the former server. These were maintained by individuals within the department before there was a common web server for the entire campus.

However, with the new web server being rolled out, all departments should be moving toward the campus' offical website so that there is a unified presentation of intformation for prospective students. This also allows for the proper delegation of management in the event of a change in faculty or time availability.

Lastly, the new web service is going to be hosted off-site to enable a more robust service to be delivered.

What about my ______ pages?

Other pages hosted here will need to be reviewed on an individual basis. We aren't against hosting them, but we need to look at what the pages actually require and if this server is the right choice.
