RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN PHYSICS

Applications are invited for admission to the Post-M.Sc. Junior Research Fellowship programme in Physics of the Institute. The session will start in August. This page gives a general outline of the programme and describes how to apply for it. About the programme: The Post-M.Sc. Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) programme in Physics constitutes the first year of the Ph.D. programme of the Institute. Any student striving for a Ph.D. in physics has to go through this programme. On successful completion of this programme, the student can select an advisor and pursue research work under him/her.
The Institute conducts both theoretical and experimental research in frontier areas of physics. The areas of research include:
Nuclear & Atomic Physics, Plasma Physics, Surface Physics, Theoretical Physics.
Fellowship and perquisites :Those admitted into the Course are designated as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) of the Institute and are entitled to stipends of Rs 16,000/- per month for the first two years and Rs 18,000/- per month thereafter. Medical reimbursement for self only as per CS(MA) Rules are also given. House Rent Allowance (HRA) at 30% of fellowship extra if he/she is not provided hostel accommodation. An annual book grant of Rs. 20,000/- is also available. Any student may enjoy external sources of fellowships (e.g., CSIR, UGC), in which case the amount of fellowship and other benefits depend upon the funding agency.
Admission procedure : The selection procedure will be based on academic records, written test & interview. The written test may be waived for some JEST/GATE/CSIR-NET-JRF qualified candidates. For details, see http://www.saha.ac.in/cs/pmsc.phys/procedure.html.
Eligibility for applying :Physics and Mathematics at the Bachelor’s level and Master’s degree in Physics /Applied Mathematics /Electronics. Candidates currently in the final year of their Master’s degree or Integrated Master’s degree may also apply.
